:adits 40+ 3.0 team "High Strung"“High Strung” a 40+ 3.0 team captained by Rachel Pavis travelled to Surprise, AZ over the weekend and won a National Championship! Thousands of players and hundreds of teams compete in USTA League Tennis. The top 17 teams make it to Nationals and the top 4 teams teams play on Sunday to determine who fill finish #1. On Friday we played Caribbean and Northern. We won both matches 3-1 and headed into Day #2 as one of 6 undefeated teams. We played 2 of those teams on Saturday: New England and Southern. We won both of those matches 3-1 and were seeded #3 going into Sunday’s playoff. Pacific Northwest played Texas in one semifinal and we played Florida. Our match wasn’t without controversy as Florida was extremely vocal and, in my opinion, a little bossy. I’ll admit I became somewhat animated and a couple of the Florida ladies called the referee to complain. I’m fiercely loyal to my players and I felt like I was defending my team. Things quieted down and we won the match by the slightest of margins! We headed into the finals having played 5 highly-contested matches… we were all physically and mentally spent but we came so far and worked so hard that it was no time to rest!
We lost a close match at 2nd doubles, the first time Emily and Kristin lost in 3 months, and 1st doubles lost the first set 6-2. 3rd doubles won the first set and of course Kristen Bria was lights out so it was 1-1 with 1st and 3rd doubles going in to their second sets. Christy and Steph lost a close one and Christi and Jen won 6-2. They both went into tiebreaks which would determine the National Championship. Christi and Jen went down 4-3 and then won 7 consecutive points to win which gave us a 2-1 lead in the match.
I tried to calculate whether we could win even if we lost 3rd doubles when I saw the opponent hit a ball out to give us an 8-5 lead. Christy and Stephanie lost a point then won 2 in a row and, as they say, the rest is history!
Thank you to our TA family and tennis community for all of your notes, gift bags, and texts of encouragement! Thank you to all of our coaches for the top notch training that made my job easy! And thank you to our players who practiced, competed, and supported each other throughout the tournament! It was exciting and surreal and as I like to say: “The team with the best nails and best outfits won a National Championship”!
